Torchin for Candlelighters’ Courage Beads
Wednesday, 07 September 2011, 5:00pm - 8:00pm

On March2cond we held our first monthly Torchin for Candlelighters’ Courage Beads - now it's a tradition!  Candlelighers is a local organization that works closely with CHEO to provide programs and services for children with cancer AND their families.  Not for profit and privately funded, one part of their service is the Courage Beads program:

Candlelighters Courage Beads are designed to document, honour and recount the journey that each child takes by providing an array of beads; each representing some facet of treatment.”

Lampworkers make beads, and together with the Ottawa Glass Bead Artists (OGBA), the Glass Shoppe Studio is thrilled to support the Candlelighters by offering the studio and the glass to make and then donate handmade beads to the children in this program.

In Canada and around the world, artists are often at the forefront of campaigns to raise awareness and funding for worthy causes such as the fight against world hunger, AIDS, and environmental protection to name but a few.  And right here in our own community there is a need for our art as lampworkers.  We can support a child’s journey through their treatment plan by doing and giving what we do best.  Imagine these children able to choose beads made for them, by us.  As we all know, handmade beads are very special, they speak to us, they nurture and humble us, they give us strength, courage, peace and now they become a very special and unique gift.

The Glass Shoppe Studio and the Ottawa Glass Bead Artists group invite all lampworkers the first wednesday of every month to come and create the milestone beads that the Candlelighters Organization needs.  There are two beads we are now working on:

The first bead we have been asked to make is the Stem-cell Harvest Bead.  This bead will be barrel shaped, on a white or ivory matrix with decoration of your choosing.  BUT the colors and size should be consistent with all bead makers.

Core color:      Light Ivory or White

Size:                about 18mm and the width 12mm

Colors:             Effetre – 264 Light Ivory or White, 216 Green, 432 Red, 404 or 408 Yellow, Black

CIM – White, 479 Green, 140 Red, 333 Yellow, Black

·I will have examples here, but essentially what we need to do, is have it recognizable by shape, base color, and decoration color.

The second bead is a happy face.  I'll show you pictures here in the studio - this bead documents 'someone that made a difference'
